Apparently, the Forth Road Bridge was the longest suspension bridge outside the US, fourth largest in the world, when it was built in 1964 with a central span of 1006m (3298ft) and a total length of 2512m (8242 ft).
Repainting the bridge began in 2002. It is expected to take until March 2009, require 20,000 m^2 of paint, and cost £10M a year. The new coat of paint is expected to last 20 years. (www.wikipedia.org)
In the days of yore, it was said a task was like ‘painting the Forth Road Bridge’ if it was never ending as it was rumoured that painters would paint the entire length of the bridge only to turn around and start again. Kind of like science in a way?
